Quick answer: A regulated supply maintains its selected output within documented limits as input and load conditions change. Choose by usable range, regulation, readback accuracy, noise and protection behaviour—not simply by display digits.

Regulated and unregulated output

A regulated supply uses feedback to hold voltage or current within stated limits over permitted input and load changes. An unregulated output varies more directly with input and loading. A smoothing capacitor can reduce ripple but is not a replacement for closed-loop regulation.

Separate regulation from dynamic response

Line regulation concerns a change in input conditions; load regulation concerns steady-state output change with load. Transient response concerns the time-dependent behaviour after a load step. These specifications answer different questions and should not be reduced to one “stability” score.

Specify range and channels

Check the voltage/current/power envelope for every required operating point. If the DUT needs multiple rails, compare independent channels, combined power and any tracking requirements. Several channels are useful only if their individual ratings and connections fit the test.

Accuracy, resolution and noise

Setting resolution defines selectable increments. Setting and readback accuracy define error under stated conditions. Ripple/noise requires a bandwidth and measurement method. Record the limits that matter at the DUT rather than selecting a supply from its display digits.

Control and acceptance

  • Check output enable, current limiting and the reset behaviour of protections.
  • Confirm local controls and any ordered communication or SENSE options.
  • Review warm-up, calibration and ventilation requirements.
  • Verify the instrument at representative operating points with suitable measurement equipment.

RegulationCompare line and load regulation with units and conditions.
ResolutionCheck setting steps separately from measurement accuracy.
PowerEnsure all required test points fit the voltage/current/power envelope.
WorkflowCheck channels, output switch, presets and needed interfaces.

Compare a supply for your test

Explore variable DC power supplies or review bench DC power supplies. Specify your operating voltage, current, power, load type and required controls for selection a configuration.
